Love's Out Of Season

by Andy Lewis

There's a grey sky hanging overhead today and a cold surf rushes in across the bay. All the signs say "closed" and no-one's out to play since the wind and rain chased summertime far away. Over at the station the train has come and gone. The platforms are deserted but she still waits for someone. And the fairground rides are rusting on the pier, all the fun's been packed away for another year. No music plays because no-one's there to hear, only ghosts of memories that never disappear standing on the boardwalk, looking out to sea, gazing at the distance and longing to be free. There's a hole inside her soul where love should be and a weight of pain that alters gravity, but there's nothing that can change her destiny in a cheap hotel with a sea view balcony.
